The Last Days of Childhood by Ken Ross
Lucy has a poor self-opinion. She sees herself as overweight, unloved and confused about the future and her sexuality. She is self-harming, worrying over forthcoming exams and not on good terms with her parents. What’s more, the coronavirus is sweeping across England and the country is on the verge of lockdown. She’ll lose contact with her friends and be unable to develop a relationship with Kell, a boy in her school year, or with her beautiful best friend, Fortine. What does she do? Can she find an ally in these difficult times?
Targeted Age Group:: 16-35
Heat/Violence Level: Heat Level 3 – PG-13
What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
The story is inspired by a girl I know of similar age to Lucy. Although much has changed in the novel the subjects dealt with are real ones and affect many young people during their transition from childhood to adulthood. Of course, I have crammed events into a brief period of time and in reality the struggle to find the adult-self takes much longer.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
As with many of my novels I imagine a group of real people at the outset, and usually as the chapters unfold they metamorphose into my actual characters. In the case of Lucy she very quickly became an individual whom I could see in my head, and she soon determined her own actions in the story.
