Book Sample
I’ll Be Gone in the Dark is the captivating story of one woman’s quest to identify an, until recently, lesser-known serial rapist and murderer who was active in California for a decade from 1976 to 1986. Known as the East Area Rapist, the Original Night Stalker, and coined by the author as the Golden State Killer, this depraved criminal confounded the minds of the California police for over forty years.
The book is an exhaustive, moving, and personal narrative of everything Michelle McNamara learned in her unending search for the Golden State Killer. She offers detailed descriptions of crime scenes, neighborhoods, detectives, and families. Her house is a pile of case files; she thinks of nothing but solving this case and surrounds herself with others who are equally as preoccupied.
While the path of the killer around California can be hard to follow at times, McNamara arranges the book into a series of vignettes, moving from one crime to the next, from past to present. She provides a keen sense of the suspense and terror that was felt during the time he was at large along with an almost sterile analysis of the geography that was so crucial to understanding the killer’s next move, and to figuring out his identity. Throughout her investigation she travels back in time, revisiting as many places and people as possible while trying to unravel one of the great unsolved mysteries of the 20th century.
