In 1980 Wellingtonian New Zealander accounting student Rory Beamont accepts an invitation to spend three days on an Island near the small town of Motueka talking about his deceased brother Neil. On Jacketts Island Lillian Ridge reintroduces Rory to Neil through her own interpretations of his actions and the tragedies that followed. Rory’s search for Neil free from Lillian’s viewpoint leads him, the following year, into the maelstrom of the anti-apartheid protest in Auckland. When Rory starts working on Arcadivale; Lillian’s parents apple orchard, he finds love with Lillian’s sister Elly and discovers the enigmatic etrog tree in the middle of the orchard. In the space between the mountains and the ocean Arcadivale becomes Rory’s home but before long destructive forces begin to threaten Rory’s world. Can Rory find security on the sands that shift before an advancing sea? Can he believe that which is lost can be rediscovered? Mountains are the home of tragedy and triumph but in a season of tragedy triumph can still be found and these are the days of ascent.
