How is Writing In Your Genre Different from Others?
I write thrillers, and there’s an expectation on the part of thriller readers that the books will be fast-paced and have a lot of action. Of course, I LOVE writing action scenes, so that’s no problem. What I think I do a bit differently is incorporate suspense and action and a likeable, kick-ass-but-flawed heroine with humor. One reviewer put it this way: “The humor serves as good balance to the fear and anxiety that [the character] freely expresses in the face of her predicament, providing a sharp and refreshing contrast to the typical stoic, grim-faced male hero of the thriller genre.”
What Advice Would You Give Aspiring Writers?
Practice. A lot. Let other people read your work and give you feedback. Hire an editor before you publish. Enjoy the process!
What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
After a recent trip to the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico, I returned home with the kernel of a story that became Yucatan Dead. The idea had formed somewhere between the ruins of Ek’ Balam and the Riviera Maya and wouldn’t let me go. Before I left on the trip I’d been writing what I thought was going to be a mystery with my character, Kate Jones.
It’s fast-paced, action-packed and based (loosely) on real events. And I had a great time writing it.
Although Yucatan Dead is the 6th installment in the Kate Jones Thriller Series, it can easily be read as a standalone. I hope you enjoy it.
About the Author:
DV Berkom is a slave to the voices in her head. As the author of two bestselling thriller series (Leine Basso and Kate Jones), her love of creating resilient, kick-*ss female characters stems from a lifelong addiction to reading spy novels, mysteries, and thrillers, and longing to find the female equivalent within those pages.
Raised in the Midwest, she received her BA in political science from the University of Minnesota and promptly moved to Mexico to live on a sailboat. Many, many cross-country moves (and several years) later, she now lives just outside of Seattle, Washington with the love of her life, Mark, an ex-chef-turned contractor, and writes every chance she gets.
