The book begins in New Hampshire with a 16-year-old girl named Sharon Amber sneaking out of her room at night to meet with a boy she had met in the forest named Gerald. When she meets him, he takes her in his arms and sweeps her away from the world she knew into a vastly different realm where magic is real. Lost and alone, she stumbles in the rain to the abode of an old woman who later reveals herself to be a witch named Olden Jade. When Jade discovers that Sharon is not affected by magic in any way, she decides to recruit her in the effort to overthrow the tyranny of Bain the Dragon King, who holds the Land of the Pix in the grip of terror.
They fly to the city of Kurault by broomstick where they release the knight named Justin from a dreadful curse, and then they all fly to the Rune Mountains to meet Darklin Reed, the demon mistress of the black arts, and Golden Fae, the faerie enchantress. After brewing an elixir to be used to cure others of the same dreadful curse Justin had been under, Jade, Justin, and Fae depart to distribute the elixir to those cursed and train them to be an army to overthrow Bain. Sharon is left alone with Reed so they may seek out the Griffin’s Gauntlet, a magical tool that can defeat Bain.
Darklin Reed and Sharon go to meet Lazenbee Lite, a cursed minstrel who produces flames whenever he is agitated. Together, they enter the Blackwoods, a haunted forest in order to reach the Griffin’s aerie where the Griffin’s Gauntlet can be obtained. The knight Justin, who does not trust Darklin Reed, later joins them. When they attempt to cross a throng of hostile spirits, Lazenbee Lite becomes agitated and sets off an inferno of destruction which his other companions barely survive. Sharon, Darklin Reed, and Justin later find themselves in an underground cavern where they run afoul of a mob of banshees, who intend to feed off of Justin. They are released when they promise to destroy Bain.
They finally reach the Griffin’s Aerie where Sharon is captured by the Griffin and is taken to his abode. Darklin Reed and Justin follow her there and fight the Griffin to the death, after which they obtain the Griffin’s Gauntlet from the creature’s horde and return to the Pix with the help of Golden Fae.
While Sharon is training with Darklin Reed to face Bain, Olden Jade flies down to take Sharon to the battle raging to overthrow the tyrant. Once there, Sharon gains entry into Bain’s castle and fights through many monsters with the Griffin’s Gauntlet before Gerald magically appears to take her to paradise. Sharon remembers her responsibilities and commitments and refuses, then goes on to face Bain, whom she defeats.
In the end, Sharon learns that the Pix is her new home with no way of returning to the world of her birth.
