Cracking Grace questions the very basic concepts of spirituality through the eyes of Audrey, a young girl in the midst of a tragedy—and through the eyes of Mary, a seemingly lifeless cemetery statue. As her father slips into madness, Audrey is left to explore a secret world for answers to her loss. Aided by her faithful companion, a bluebird named Bluebell, Mary sets out on her own mission of discovery—despite chiding from the other residents of the cemetery: the cynical Jesus; two wisecracking gargoyles; and the eccentric ghost Mrs. Grant, a curmudgeonly old woman trapped among the graves. Part fable, part dark fantasy, Cracking Grace is the story of loss and of newfound friendships for a young, wounded girl. It’s the story of a father bound to the flesh, unable to accept death. It’s the story of a woman trapped in stone, determined to understand her existence.

What Advice Would You Give Aspiring Writers?
Shelve your projects for a year and then come back to them with a fresh perspective.
I enjoy writing dark fantasy and horror tales (although Cracking Grace is not a horror novel) that explore complex relationships and question perceptions of reality. I also like to add a dash of magical realism and fables to my work. Cracking Grace is my first novel.
I am also a lover of cheesy horror movies (especially from the 80s), and I am passionate about animal welfare issues.
What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
Not raised with any significant spiritual teachings, this book is part an exploration of spirituality – questioning, looking for the truth, deciding what to believe. The characters in this book allowed me to do this in the most elementary and innocent way. I believe that is why I am told the book works on multiple levels and with multiple ages. I hope readers find a deeper meaning they can apply to themselves, but ‘Cracking Grace’ can also be enjoyed as a straightforward young adult fantasy.
