How is Writing In Your Genre Different from Others?
I think crafting a plot with numerous different characters and making all their different opinions and life experiences believable is very challenging as opposed to a focus on just one or two characters. A lot of research is required as well since there are numerous locations involved. While I have spent time in some of my locales, it is not possible for me to visit them all.
What Advice Would You Give Aspiring Writers?
If you love it keep on plugging way until you find a formula that works for you.
A native of Louisville, KY, Russell spent seven years researching and writing Agent of Influence. A fast-paced thriller, the novel grew out of his travels as well as his obsession with history. A voracious reader, he devours as many history books as possible with a special emphasis on terrorism, 20th century espionage, WWII, Presidential biographies, and the Revolutionary War. On the fiction side his biggest influences are Tom Clancy, Ian Fleming, Vince Flynn, James Clavell, Daniel Silva, Robert Ludlum, Mario Puzo, and Ernest Hemingway.
If he really has some free time on his hands he enjoys scuba diving and skiing. He has been a certified scuba diver since 1996 and has been diving in California, Cozumel, Cancun, Grand Cayman, Belize, Honduras, Nassau,Key West, and the Exuma Islands. One of his most memorable and exciting trips was an expedition to cage dive with great white sharks on the Pacific coast of Mexico. His next full length thriller, a sequel to Agent of Influence tentatively titled Tropical Jihad, is scheduled for release in late 2014 and he is looking forward to incorporating some diving scenes into the book.
What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
I am a voracious reader and devour as many history books as possible with a special emphasis on terrorism, 20th century espionage, WWII, Presidential biographies, and the Revolutionary War. I love to travel and thoroughly enjoy incorporating my travels and odd historical tidbits into a novel. The more I dig, the more I continue to find history to be stranger than anything I can create.
